Many of us mistakenly believe that the nuclear age began in the 1940s, with the advent of the atom bomb. In reality, it started in 1920s Europe, when scientists became embroiled in a highly personal struggle to prove that nuclear fission was more than a dream. Author Aczel chronicles the efforts of Enrico Fermi, Marie Curie, and others, weaving a story that reads more like fiction than fact. Narrator Eric Conger's low-key style allows the listener to focus on the personalities behind the power struggle. Conger uses a soft-spoken manner that allows the dialogue and stories to take center stage. His judicious balance of emotion keeps the listener's focus squarely on the personalities and events that transcended decades and changed the world. D.J.S. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
