Willey (God's Politician: Pope John Paul II, the Catholic Church, and the New World Order) attempts to accomplish a lot in this work as he explores the markedly innovative papacy of Pope Francis. The author examines the Pope's past and developments up to this point, while giving a snapshot of how he is addressing century-old traditions and, at the same time, striving to be prophetic concerning where this trajectory might take the Catholic Church. While ambitious, the narrative manages to weave all these components in a complimentary fashion. Touching on issues such as wealth inequality, financial scandal, the place of women in the church, marriage, and public relations via Twitter, the author explores a wide variety of subjects. VERDICT Willey keeps the story moving as well as compelling, sharing vignettes from history to the present day. Although there are few direct answers to the issues he raises, this honest account will allow readers to become more informed on pressing issues facing the Catholic Church by understanding where Pope Francis has come from and anticipating where he will go in the future.--Mark Hanson, Maranatha Baptist Univ. Lib., Watertown, WI
