Mankiewicz (Remote Control: Television and the Manipulation of American Life) led a long and interesting life (1924-2014) full of family and friends. In this memoir written with his friend, journalist and author Swerdlow, Mankiewicz shares experiences from growing up in Beverly Hills as the son of Academy Award-winning film director Herman Mankiewicz to becoming a major power player in Washington, DC. Mankiewicz comes across as a real-life Forrest Gump, with moments in his life set against a backdrop of historical events. He started out as an attorney and eventually became a director in the Peace Corps. He also worked as the president of National Public Radio. The author was especially proud of serving as the press secretary to the late Robert F. Kennedy. Politics was a major passion for Mankiewicz, and the book candidly details behind-the-scenes life of a major political campaign. VERDICT A thoughtful and memorable volume that will make readers feel as though they are having coffee with the author. Recommended for both film and history aficionados.--Holly Skir, York Coll., CUNY
