Retired pathologist Dormandy (The Worst of Evils: The Fight Against Pain) provides a wide-ranging and highly engaging history of one of the world's most prominent (and most addictive) narcotics: opium. Made from the poppy flower, opium has been used for medicinal and recreational purposes since prehistoric times and is perhaps the only drug that started two wars. Another derivative from the poppy--morphine--was discovered in 1804 by chemists studying opium and remains one of the standard treatments for pain in contemporary medicine. Dormandy traces opium through centuries of history and across multiple geographic regions, showing how the opium trade connected disparate parts of the world and examining how different societies viewed the narcotic. VERDICT Specialists in the history of medicine will find this book helpful, as will general readers wanting to know how social attitudes to narcotics have changed over time.
