This nonfiction board book, part of DK’s When I Grow Up series, relays eight international athletes’ journeys from childhood to triumph. Page headers present the subject’s name and an encircled headshot, the athlete’s sport, and an illustrated version of their home country’s flag (figures include Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, and British swimmer Ellie Simmonds). Spreads describe each athlete’s youth and adult accomplishments: “big basketball star” LeBron James “uses his basketball success to help other kids achieve their dreams.” Friendly illustrations by Semple show each athlete in motion, complemented by photographs. Though the smattering of athletes feels random, the assortment is diverse, and the read-aloud text will appeal to caregivers hoping to inspire their youngest readers with real-life examples of athletic prowess. Ages 2–5.

PreS-K-DK's "When I Grow Up" series captures the great achievements of highly skilled and inspirational people from all over the world. Athletes can inspire many people, regardless of their background. If they believe in themselves, they can accomplish amazing feats. For example, Usain Bolt grew up in Jamaica and was a naturally fast runner. Even though he dreamed of playing cricket, when the opportunity came to pursue running instead, he took it and became the fastest man in the world. Similiarly, leaders come from all walks of life and can make a difference in their respective fields. Ruth Bader Ginsburg overcame sexism and personal setbacks in order to become a United States Supreme Court justice. From curious children to noteworthy adults, the people in these books are remarkable for their contributions to society. These board books are designed for young children to experience independently. However, the length of the text and the complexity of the ideas require a caregiver's additional attention. Long sentences and blocks of text are used to present information and are written more for adults to read aloud. Hand-drawn representations of famous athletes and leaders are placed beside real photographs to tell their stories. VERDICT These books demonstrate the many varied accomplishments of humans all over the world; families will enjoy reading these books together as they learn more about these influential people in history.-Mary Lanni, formerly at Denver Public Library
