Gr 9 Up-Each of these volumes features alphabetically arranged readings about topics that are similar in scope and coverage to those found in many extant encyclopedias. Readings are supplemented by numerous brief "Curriculum Context" sidebars that emphasize important points, ask critical thinking questions, describe the topic's place in history curricula, and/or identify possible questions about the material. However, the series fails to deliver on its curriculum-friendly premise as the readings do not provide in-depth coverage or develop analysis that would give readers a broader understanding that would allow them to address the very points the sidebars raise. This series is not noteworthy enough, either in premise or material, to merit its purchase.

Grades 7-10 From the six-volume Curriculum Connections: Civil War series, this book presents 30 short chapters on topics related to the war's weapons, tactics, and strategy. The alphabetical arrangement by subject seems a bit arbitrary, and some information appears in more than one chapter. But the fact that each chapter functions independently of the others makes this a useful resource for students researching a particular topic, such as cavalry, desertion, naval warfare, or prisoner-of-war camps. Well researched and clearly written, the chapters offer informative discussions supported by sidebars, page references to related content in other chapters, and definitions of terms in the margins. Also in the margins are Curriculum Context boxes, which provide additional facts, raise questions, and occasionally suggest that students might be tested on a particular point. Back matter includes a glossary and a list of book and website sources. The many small illustrations include many period photos as well as prints, drawings, and paintings. A useful addition to library collections.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
