Parents usually wish to create a resilient family, but parents who have one or more children with physical disabilities face particular challenges that are often not addressed in typical parenting books. How does a different set of abilities for one child fit in with the family structure? Who will take primary responsibility for ongoing medical issues? How can parents deal with the added stress or feelings of disappointment related to their child's disability? Psychologists Kriegsman and Palmer aim to answer such questions here and to help parents of physically disabled young people by focusing on the social and emotional aspects of family life affected by disability. The authors show families how to be pragmatic and inclusive when solving problems and setting expectations. The real family stories and personal experiences of the authors, one of whom has such a disability, create an intimate and nonjudgmental tone with a degree of optimism that parents are likely to appreciate. VERDICT A valuable resource for families looking for encouragement as they try to create an inclusive environment for their child with a physical disability.--Mindy Rhiger, Minneapolis
