Grades K-2 Brazilian Formula One champion Aryton Senna grew up in a wealthy family and from an early age loved driving with the family chauffeur. At four he received his first go-cart and often beat out older drivers in races. Eventually he moved to England, where he drove on the Formula One circuit, winning many events, often against his rival teammate Alain Prost. Sanchez Vegara succinctly highlights several child-friendly episodes from Senna's life: being escorted home by police after driving solo as a small child; paying close attention to the details of each race track, and showing kindness to other drivers, especially after a crash. Griffiths' richly hued, mixed-media illustrations employ a quirky, comic style and make good use of facial expressions, especially to convey humor. Senna's black cat also appears on several spreads, silently eyeing his owner's activities. Although Senna's tragic death in 1994 goes unmentioned, this book does a good job highlighting the early influences that helped to propel his big dreams.
