Verdict: Originally published in 1971 and long out of print, this memoir of the authors' friendship with a lion has been updated and clarified. The story is touching, but the writing is weak. Not a necessary purchase. Background: In 1969, the authors bought a lion cub from Harrods. The cub, named Christian, quickly outgrew their apartment, but fortunately, George Adamson, who with his wife Joy had successfully reintroduced a lioness named Elsa back into the wild (popularized in the best-seller Born Free), transformed Christian from a city-raised cub to a mature lion in the Kenyan wilderness. The authors were reunited with Christian after a year and a clip of their exuberant reunion was recently posted on YouTube, igniting a resurgence of interest in Christian and the authors.-Edell M.
