The Algerian conflict raged for eight bloody years and almost became a civil war. Waged primarily by Muslim nationals against European colonists protected by the French army, the war was marked by guerrilla fighting and savage attacks against civilians on both sides. The present conflict in the Middle East is frighteningly similar, making this book a good volume to have on library shelves. Horne provides a new preface.
