The University of Illinois Press is to be commended for maintaining the in-print status of this now-classic biography of Martin Luther King Jr., which was originally published in 1970 and written by the highly esteemed and Pulitzer Prizewinning author of a two-volume biography of W. E. B. DuBois (Biography of a Race, 18691919, 1994; The Fight for Equality and the American Century, 19191963, 2001). This edition contains a new preface, but what isn't newnor should it beis the at-once magisterial and intimate biographical account and assessment with which Lewis first graced the world. The book was widely applauded upon its publication and has enjoyed the sustained respect of historians and readers ever since. Public librarians need to face the fact that their shelves devoted to modern American history can't be considered complete without it. Purchase it and focus attention on it.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
