There are a number of biographies of psychics, but this one, unlike many, doesn't particularly focus on Saxman's clientele; they appear, for the most part, in brief vignettes concluding each chapter. This is more a story of a dysfunctional family that could be almost any dysfunctional family, except for the ghosts, spirits, and demons. Most of the family drama occurs between Saxman and her uptight, often cruel mother, though Saxman's father, a handsome vagabond, consumes the thoughts of both mother and daughter. But Saxman was also obsessed with the young British actor Jack Wild, who played in Oliver. The drama of her search for Wild, and the eventual revelation of their relationship, will keep readers turning pages. Those skeptical of all things paranormal probably won't be persuaded by Saxman's glimpse into the other world. And she doesn't offer much advice to readers, either, other than warning them about Mother Earth's impatience (and potential vengeance). Still, as a compelling family drama, this strange spiritual memoir somehow works.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
