The benefit of greenhouse gardening becomes self-evident in even a casual perusal of Marshall’s new book. His seasonal guides, lighting expertise, heating and cooling advice, and watering tips all set up new levels of possibility for the average gardener who is game to explore new techniques for plant cultivation and extend the growing season. He covers a wide range of topics, from choosing a spot to placing the structure; framing and building it; seeding and propagating plants; growing herbs, veggies, flowers, fruit trees, orchids, bromeliads, and cacti. One of the most fascinating chapters, “Growing Without Soil,” looks at hydroponics: growing plants without soil, the way the Aztecs grew food on rafts floating on dredged canals. “The Aztecs would hardly recognize the extent to which their systems have evolved,” Marshall writes. “Hydroponics has become a commercial greenhouse staple.” This invaluable tool will serve as an inspiring blueprint for gardeners ready to embark on the adventure of gardening for even more months in the year.

Greenhouses defy seasonality. They can be warm and inviting places of relaxation and a home addition providing indoor heat during cold weather. Other uses include overwintering tender plants, such as summer-flowering bulbs, or even starting a small business specializing in exotic plants, with imagination the only limit. With many shapes and sizes available, choice is crucial, Marshall notes, as he lists the positives and drawbacks of each type of greenhouse, then discusses the steps involved in creating the greenhouse environment, seed starting and propagating, and understanding all aspects of growth. Growing vegetables, herbs, and fruit, for instance, plus flowers, foliage plants, orchids and bromeliads, and cacti and other succulents, are all covered with plant-specific guides. Marshall concludes with sections on greenhouse maintenance, controlling pests and diseases, and starting a business. This comprehensive manual boasts illustrations and full-color photos throughout as well as lists of manufacturers, associations and plant societies, recommended reading, and an index. An excellent resource on the subject.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
