It's easy to cheer for sportswriter Daugherty, who writes affectingly about life with his exceptional daughter, Jillian, born with Down syndrome. He doesn't sugarcoat it. Being in regular-ed classrooms didn't ensure a regular childhood, he writes. He and his wife are fierce advocates for Jillian, and they succeeded in taking on school administrators to secure better services for their daughter. He also helps Jillian land a job with the Northern Kentucky University basketball team, filling water bottles at practice, mopping the basketball floor, and passing out fresh towels to sweaty players. ( I love my team, she says.) Jillian gets a happy ending: a love-at-first-sight boyfriend who will soon become her husband. They get the big things right: whom they love and who loves them, writes Daugherty. He also raises some big-picture questions about parents' desire for perfect kids. Jillian is closer to perfect than anyone I've known, he says. This feel-good memoir will appeal to all parents of children with special needs.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
