First-time author and second-generation nurseryman Horvath (owner, Intrinsic Perennial Gardens) complements his text with scores of photos of colorful sedums, up close, in containers, and in outdoor designs. Sedums can survive a wide range of climatic conditions and are more drought tolerant than many other flowering plants, characteristics that make them attractive to a great many gardeners. They can easily be included in cutting-edge design: on rooftops; planted in stone walls; as border plantings; and as low-maintenance ground cover. Horvath describes landscaping with the plants, their growth and propagation (he highlights 150 recommended varieties), and their distinct characteristics. The book compares favorably with Ray Stephenson's Sedum: Cultivated Stonecrops, as additional plants and varieties have been identified, reclassified, and hybridized over the last decades. VERDICT This appealing book provides a fine current overview that will clarify the attraction of sedums to many recreational gardeners. Horvath's personable writing style should further widen the appeal. Also recommended to professional landscapers.--Deborah Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll. Lib., Dunwoody
