Grades 7-12 This dynamic small title in the Groundwork Guide series stands out for its accessible introduction to historical and contemporary democracy across the globe. Laxer skillfully supports his arguments with examples and avoids pat definitions. Whether it is the struggle for womens rights, the fall of the Berlin wall, or the invasion of Iraq, the topics are supported with well-chosen details, and Laxer is always clear that the fight for basic rights is not over, from Latin America and the Middle East to the U.S. Only the thin bibliography and source notes will disappoint readers, who will want to go on from here to find out more, especially since many of the issues are being hotly debated in the news. Does one person have the right to resist the will of a government elected by a majority? Has the U.S. invasion of Iraq brought democracy and respect for human rights? Has globalization paralyzed democracy by putting power in the hands of a few and creating vast economic inequality? Great for group discussion, this will also support speech and research projects.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
