Gr 7 Up-These titles are well written, interesting, and nonjudgmental. Attractive design elements include sidebars on relevant, themed topics and mostly color photos that generally depict the subjects in their professional guises. The respectful tone makes each title a standout. Though subjects are portrayed as admirable and successful, their flaws are addressed, as well as their disappointments and setbacks. Moreover, the hardships depicted aren't always connected to these figures' LGBTQ status. VERDICT These eye-opening volumes are recommended for all libraries.

Grades 7-10 The latest volume in Rosen's Remarkable LGBTQ Lives series profiles political commentator Rachel Maddow, whose life as an out lesbian has been distinguished by a number of firsts: one of only two openly gay students in her freshman class at Stanford University; the first openly gay recipient of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship; and the first openly gay person to host a prime-time news show on TV. Growing up in the 1980s, Maddow was concerned about the AIDS epidemic and, after graduating from college, became an AIDS activist. Stints in radio and guest appearances on TV ultimately led to her becoming the host of The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. Author Houts' slender but informative and well documented biography gives readers insights into Maddow's personal and professional life. The book is enriched by contextual sidebar features (LGBT Issues in the News, Fight LGBT Discrimination, etc.) and numerous full-color illustrations. The book is further enhanced by generous back matter including a glossary, time line, and bibliography. For Maddow fans and all those interested in LGBTQ issues.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
