Gr 7 Up-These titles are well written, interesting, and nonjudgmental. Attractive design elements include sidebars on relevant, themed topics and mostly color photos that generally depict the subjects in their professional guises. The respectful tone makes each title a standout. Though subjects are portrayed as admirable and successful, their flaws are addressed, as well as their disappointments and setbacks. Moreover, the hardships depicted aren't always connected to these figures' LGBTQ status. VERDICT These eye-opening volumes are recommended for all libraries.

Grades 7-10 The story of Harvey Milk is more than that of the first openly gay politician to hold a government position in the U.S. This entry in the Remarkable LGBTQ Lives series begins with a brief look at his family background and adolescence, before delving into more formative events that would shape his personal and political aspirations. As the author relates Milk's wandering years and relocation to San Francisco, she explains the biases against the gay community in America at the time and includes such dangers as being fired, placed in jail, or murdered. The author also highlights the rise of San Francisco's gay establishment. The bulk of the easy-to-read text, however, focuses on Milk's desire to run for office, popularity in his Castro neighborhood, eventual win, political views, and key opponents. The final chapters describe Milk's assassination, the riots that ensued after his killer's verdict was announced, and Milk's continuing legacy. Complemented by period photographs, the book concludes with LGBTQ ally tips, as well as further resources.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
