Gr 8 Up-According to a 2014 study conducted by the American Psychological Association, teens' stress levels are comparable to those of adults. The pressures that teens face can often make them feel as though they're on a roller coaster. In this latest addition to the "Instant Help Solutions" series, readers are provided with very useful strategies for lowering stress levels using cognitive behavioral therapy and positive psychology, which the author refers to as "brake levers." What makes this guide appealing is the accessibility of the stress-management exercises and the relatability of the scenarios presented. One simple exercise asks readers to imagine squeezing a lemon three times, increasing the pressure with each repeated action. Following the final squeeze, readers are then implored to reflect on their feelings. The author's abundant use of stories and quotes from teens from his counseling practice should resonate well with the intended audience. Supplementing the main text is a reference section of books, films, videos, and articles that have been published within the past few years. Bernstein emphasizes equipping teens with good coping skills to deal with life's challenges and encouraging teens who may be feeling anxious or overwhelmed. VERDICT Bernstein, a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience, takes a positive and enlightening approach in discussing teen stress.
