Director Federico Fellini's 1960 film La Dolce Vita, an expose of Rome's rootless cafe society, was an international art house success, marking a sharp departure from his smaller scale, neorealist 1950s classics La Strada and Nights of Cabiria. La Dolce Vita earned Fellini the sobriquet "public sinner" and began his personal odyssey through the decade. The editor of this oversized book aims to "reintroduce" the director to a modern audience, giving readers a "complete immersion in his mindscape." Recurring images run through his films, from circuses, parades, grotesques, and a steady procession of lush, desirable but somewhat threatening women. Many consider his 1963 film 81/2 to be the best portrait of the inner creative life of a film director. At various points, Fellini employed a psychic on the set and sometimes had a small orchestra playing to set the mood. Essays in this volume weigh the maestro's influence on 1960s fashion, and his always complicated relationship with women, including his wife and sometimes star Giulietta Masina. VERDICT Fellini's films had a far-reaching and liberating impact on directors, including Bob Fosse and Woody Allen. Unfortunately, although it covers a famously visual director, the work's large-format photographs don't reveal much. While the essays give valuable insight into Fellini's art, the book is an optional purchase.--Stephen Rees, formerly with Levittown Lib., PA
