Helmet for My Pillow

The late author, who was a journalist before he joined the Marine Corps in 1942, wrote a humorous history of his WWII experiences. His literary talent allowed him to document the lighter side of military life, even in the midst of deployment and combat. The author's substitution of the unprintable barracks words with longer and proper ones gives the stories a pleasant punch. Narrator John Nelson adds to the fun with perfect voices for the sergeants, the Australian girls, and Leckie's drunken friends. Nelson adapts to the author's short sentences, delivering them with the directness of a vintage newsreel announcer. Written in 1957, these firsthand memories come from a bright mind. J.A.H.
