Is there a famous writer more identified with a place than Ernest Hemingway is with Paris? Agreed, that is an arguable statement, but what isn't up for debate is that Hemingway and Paris made a romantic pairing that continues to call to us almost 100 years after Hemingway lived there. He was becoming a hot new thing in fiction writing and Paris was playing the ever-lovely, gracious, and stimulating host to what American ex-pat writer Gertrude Stein called the Lost Generation, that group of disaffected young peopleprimarily from the U.S.who flocked to the French capital seeking a place in a world torn from its anchor by the social disorientation wrought by WWI. This achingly effective book is an album of crisp, evocative black-and-white photographs of locations in Paris that speak to some aspect of Hemingway's time there. Accompanyingand amply informativecaptions link Hemingway's Parisian experiences to the photos of the haunts and hangouts, the landmarks and public spaces, that, if marble edifices and green spaces and hallowed cafe walls could talk, would tell their side of how Hemingway lived and loved and was altered in outlook by his enviable sojourn there.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
