At the beginning of his straightforward, no-nonsense guide, McBride acknowledges that there are a plethora of screenwriting books on the market. Author of the screenplay for Rock 'n' Roll High School as well as several film books, he distinguishes his approach by advising aspiring screenwriters that the best way to get started is to write an adaptation of a short story, and then he takes them through the process, step by step. Using Jack London's To Build a Fire, McBride emphasizes the importance of outlining the story for reference and then creating a separate outline for the adaptation. It's essential to be willing to break the back of the book, that is, to make the changes necessary to translate the story to a film medium. From there, McBride takes practical readers through the process of creating characters and properly formatting their work to craft a script for a 20- to 30-page short film. McBride offers the general basics here, too, including where to draw stories from and how to structure a screenplay, though he eschews commercial, high concept films. A perfect resource for film lovers with literary aspirations.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
