One state, one sport, three teams--a perfect setting for a book about football in Texas. Veteran sportswriter Eatman (If These Walls Could Talk) closely chronicles the 2015 season of a high school (Plano Senior High School), college (Baylor University), and professional team (the Dallas Cowboys). In a passionate narrative, Eatman shares his insights into the wins and losses of all three teams. Along the way, readers are rewarded with a rare view of football on three levels. Only Baylor had a successful season that year, but the off-the-field issues of the Bears' program proved to be a disaster. The author does not dodge Baylor's problems of domestic violence which led to the dismissal and departures of head football coach Art Briles and university president and chancellor Kenneth Starr, among others. The ups and downs experienced by the players and coaches of all three teams reflect the attitude of the sport in a state where football is dominant. VERDICT With near unlimited access to players, coaches, and others within the various football programs, Eatman crafts an excellent narrative that parallels the sports books of John Feinstein, offering a unique glance into the minds of those involved in high school football.--Boyd Childress, formerly with Auburn Univ.
