In this warmhearted memoir, actress Dench brings such a fresh and natural reaction as she describes her roles from Mother Courage to Cleopatra, Lady Bracknell and Sally Bowles that a sense of identification occurs; Dench shows the theatrical inside plumbing of the player and how personal insights, emotional backstories, and initial responses create the character. She believes she is blessed with her marriage to actor Michael Williams and a supportive and understanding family, sharing stories about them as well as about actors Sir John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Stephen Sondheim. Her tales of finding movie fame later in her career and her trips on the Oscar red carpet are heartfelt whether she's with Cate Blanchett or Vin Diesel. With candor and wit, Dench interweaves her stage presences with her love of playing pranks on fellow actors, on the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and on Broadway. Considering the idea of retirement, she says, "you retire to do things that you really want to do. Well, I am doing things I want to do now." Photos.

In the preface, Dame Judi herself tells listeners that this memoir is not intended as an autobiography but as an addendum to John Miller's earlier biographies. Actress Samantha Bond then takes over the first-person narration. Bond's voice is elegant, charming, and full of pep and vinegar as she recounts snippets of Dench's life and remarkable career. The memoir takes listeners from her first role as Ophelia in HAMLET at the Old Vic to her more recent TV and film work. Generous with her praise of fellow actors and directors, Dame Judi candidly expresses strong likes and dislikes, revealing a keen sense of humor, a puckish penchant for pranks, and devotion to her family and her career. Bond's performance adds sparkle to this delightful audiobook. S.J.H. (c) AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine

Dame Judi Dench, whose illustrious career spans theater, film, and television, reflects intelligently and with occasional humor on her roles and accomplishments and provides anecdotes about her costars. But this is not a gossipy memoir, and she delves only rarely into her personal life. Fellow actress and close friend Samantha Bond is an excellent reader; in fact, she sounds a lot like Dench herself, who narrates the preface. Her discussion of acting techniques will be invaluable to anyone aspiring to master the craft. Recommended for Dench fans as well as for theater students and enthusiasts. ["A delightful visit with a rare actress," read the review of the New York Times best-selling St. Martin's hc, LJ 1/11.--Ed.]--Phillip Oliver, Univ. of North Alabama Lib., Florence
