Armstrong, a career character actor with a healthy resume, self-identified as a nerd long before the term was cool. Growing up in Detroit and Geneva, Switzerland, in the 1950s and '60s, Armstrong discovered a deep, abiding love for books and the theater. He also suffered at the hands of school-yard bullies and often employed comedy to escape their torments. He initially decided to pursue theater as a career, but film and TV proved to be Armstrong's bread and butter. In the second half of his memoir, he reminisces about his days on the sets of movies and TV shows, drawing, in part, on the journals he kept at the time and conversations with friends. There's plenty of on-set gossip to be found about such occurrences as Tom Cruise and Rebecca de Mornay's affair on the Risky Business set or Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepherd's famous feud on Moonlighting. But Armstrong's love of literature and comedy also makes his account of his boyish struggles down-to-earth, relatable, and funny, which will have readers cheering for him throughout.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
