Library Journal

Starred review from March 15, 2017

Walker, a Guardian correspondent and author of the newspaper's bike blog, offers a fascinating read that informs, educates, and inspires. The author debunks many myths against developing and investing in urban bicycling infrastructure, especially in a world where over half of the population lives in cities. Research studies show that more cycling and less driving is a benefit for the Earth and its billions of inhabitants. Are such findings generalizable to all locales? Perhaps, not. Yet, Walker has done an amazing job of gathering and synthesizing the positive effects on human health, culture, economics, etc. The statistics are hard to deny, and readers should not be surprised by the negative consequences of a world dominated by motor vehicles. VERDICT Walker has certainly done his homework. For libraries wanting to update their sports collections as well as those seeking to foster a more bike-friendly infrastructure in urban and rural areas.--John N.
