Perhaps no other group of Roman Catholics was as dramatically impacted by Vatican II as American nuns. Though it is difficult to quantitatively measure this type of seismic shift in a lifestyle and a belief system, Rogers has conducted an amazing series of interviews with female members of more than 40 different religious communities, weaving them into a vibrant tapestry reflecting the spiritual continuities and the corporeal changes that have defined their lives and their work during the past 50 years. Smashing stereotypes, this oral history details the abrupt transformations in faith and lifestyle these women navigated and embraced as they reinvigorated their age-old ministries in a contemporary world. The testimonies of religious front-liners, these first-hand accounts provide insight on the evolution of the church and its members. Nuns continue to reshape and restructure their roles inside and outside of a traditionally male-dominated institutional hierarchy, and who better to tell this unique story than the trailblazers themselves?(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
