Gone are the days of making coercive decisions, barking orders, and giving inspiring speeches, according to Marquet (Turn the Ship Around!, 2012). Instead, he delivers a playbook for empowering individuals and teams to make better decisions and to take greater ownership in achieving goals. Marquet's playbook has six steps: control the clock, collaborate, get commitment, complete goals, improve outcomes, and connect with people. Each chapter breaks down a step in the playbook, and includes tips, such as seven ways to ask better questions and connect is about caring. Readers learn how to choose their words to dramatically improve decision-making and execution, while achieving transformational leadership. The chapters are summarized, which helps readers glean key ideas from the concept. Marquet includes anecdotes, from the Best Picture Oscar snafu of 2017 to his own experiences aboard the submarine Santa Fe. Readers will relate to storylines and his compelling conversational tone. The book will appeal to those in the workplace or the military, parents, teachers, and anyone who is interested in improving conversations and relationships.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
