Hill dives deeply into his growing understanding of how his whiteness limits his ability to do God's work. Narrator Joe Hempel manages Hill's tone effectively, conveying the uncertainty, confusion, and humility that Hill feels as he learns how his approaches prove alienating to the very people with whom he wishes to build alliances. The blend of author and narrator effectively captures Hill's genuine attempt to unpack his whiteness and to help others to do the same.
