Intrepid, ever-curious, and creative philosophy professor, musician, and writer Rothenberg continues his unique and paradigm-altering inquiry into the music of other species and interspecies music. Having played his clarinet with whales (Thousand Mile Song, 2008), insects (Bug Music, 2013), and various birds, he now focuses on the iconic nightingale, whose song Rothenberg describes as loud, long, intricate, structured, and musical. These avian performers fly thousands of miles from Africa every spring to sing in a bustling Berlin park, congregating there more than any other place in Europe and attracting nightingale scientists along with Rothenberg and fellow innovative musicians. Hoping to learn more about "nightingale aesthetics" and how the birds respond to urban clamor, Rothenberg practices deep listening; balances on the line between science and art, noting that both help us love the world; shares sonograms of nightingale songs; and instigates jam sessions with the bird species he calls "the Thelonious Monk of the avian song world." Lush with literary allusions, Rothenberg's enlightening and inspiring nightingale immersion attunes us to the vast richness of natural soundscapes and the glory of life itself.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
