As promised by the title, this somewhat unusual book features four animal experts (a wildlife photographer, pet store owner, veterinarian, and reptile shop owner) demonstrating correct ways of holding animals. Subjects include an array of creatures, from beetles and butterflies to iguanas and monitor lizards (as well as standard pets like rabbits, cats, and dogs). Each critter receives individual attention, with brief nods to basic facts, helpful hints, and safety warnings, accompanied by a series of full-color photos demonstrating proper holds. Author and photographer Matsuhashi's hope is that this guide, first published in Japan, will encourage children and adults to reconnect with nature, and develop respect for and rapport with animals. The book features some subjects that aren't native to the western hemisphere (crocodiles, sugar gliders), and others that generally don't evoke cuddly impulses (snails, slugs, anacondas). Still, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of literature specifically devoted to this subject, and the thorough approach is noble. Collections supporting animal lovers will want to have this on hand.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
