Much in the public eye since Mitt Romney's failed quest for the presidency, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed the Mormon Church) here receives scrutiny from a scholar curious about the religious behavior of Latter-day Saint millennials, now in their twenties or thirties. To interpret survey data indicating an upsurge of disaffection in this age set, Riess draws from extensive interviews. Riess allows readers to hear repeatedly from pious millennial Latter-day Saints, joyous in devotion to a church that demands much?but also offers much. But she focuses more attention on the disaffected, some manifesting the same anti-institutional impulses affecting peers leaving other denominations, some resisting the distinctively conservative Latter-day Saint teachings on family, gender, and sexuality. Riess' commentary repeatedly suggests that church leaders should listen more to such doubters in setting the church's course. Her perspective may puzzle readers aware of the withering of liberal Protestant denominations that have accommodated themselves to permissive secularism. A sociologist examines the current state?and speculates on the future?of an American-born faith.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
