This new volume, from the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship's director of graduate and faculty ministries, is of a piece with the recent reclamations of select aspects of pre-Reformation Christian practice and spirituality among American Protestants. The resemblance to Phyllis Tickle's "Divine Hours" is notable (and, indeed, one of the jacket blurbs comes from Tickle), but Gross's avowed intention is to open up the established readings of the liturgy for personal understanding, reflection, and prayer. VERDICT A solid contribution on the liturgical year for ecclesial or worship-group resources.
