The Walking Dead series, in all its media forms, is like a really good pop rock 'n' roll band. It has taken the stale zombie-apocalypse premise everyone has long since gotten over and done it transcendentally well for an unusually long time. Readers might suspect that in this fourth Walking Dead novel, Descent, the charm might be wearing off. The previous books followed a neat trilogy arch with the rise and fall of postapocalyptic town Woodbury's tyrannical governor; so, with that taken care of, perhaps we should be done. But we are not, especially not when there's a new zombie horde and a zealous plague-world cult to throw into the mix. Again, intuition says the story should fall flat from exhaustion, but, while the new installment likely won't be as fondly enjoyed as the previous volumes, Descent maintains the series' strength due to the author's truly powerful ability to describe the series' world and to establish tone, pacing, kinesthetics, and every other nut and bolt that holds a good novel together.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
