Born into a fringe cult, Ada grew up with a twisted view of God, religion, and herself. It wasn't until she met and eloped with photographer Julian Goetz that Ada realized how different life could be if one believed in a gracious God. Karen Walker exists in a loveless marriage and finds physical fulfillment outside of it. Her life collides with Ada's on the day of a tragic plane crash that kills Julian, with the ramifications rippling forward in a tension-building crescendo of lies and secrets. VERDICT With its well-drawn, realistic characters and eloquent but tough prose, this is a haunting examination of life in all its gritty and painful moments. Parrish is the winner of the 2009 Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Book of the Year Watch Over Me. Readers who like spare fiction about loss, love, and redemption will appreciate Parrish's novel.

Parrish (Stones for Bread, 2013) creates a window onto what we keep hidden: secrets of shame, ambition, fear, and hope; secrets that ripple out and affect those around us in ways we remain unaware of. A plane crash is the catalyst for revelations and changes in the lives of Parrish's characters that they never could have imagined. Ada Goetz, a newlywed rescued from a religious cult by her photographer husband, finds herself unsure how to navigate the modern world after his death in the crash. To find closure, she seeks out the subjects of his portraits and hears the stories of how they met and how their lives changed. Ultimately, she feels as though she knows her husband more fully now than she did when he was alive. Katherine Walker has a very different experience when the crash cracks open the facade concealing the deception simmering deep within her family. Will they ever be whole again? Parrish's inspirational novel is a must-read for anyone moved by the power of human emotion and redemption.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
