Bestseller Burton (You’re Not Safe) ties the past to the present in her latest romantic thriller set in Nashville. Thirty years after the murder of Annie Rivers Dawson, lawyer Rachel Wainwright is trying to get Annie’s convicted killer a DNA test. Det. Deke Morgan’s deceased father was the policeman who arrested the man, and Deke sends through the request, assuming it will prove guilt rather than innocence. Then a woman who looks like Annie is killed in the same fashion, and more deaths follow. Burton’s trademark is providing the serial killer’s viewpoint without giving anything away, and by feeding the reader tiny details one at a time, she keeps the tension building. The attraction between Rachel and Deke develops slowly, with respect paving the way for a lasting relationship, and the reader roots for both. A few too many coincidences make this story less convincing than some of Burton’s other novels.

Defense attorney Rachel Wainwright wants justice for her client Jeb Jones, and that means a DNA test that might prove he didn't commit the murder he was convicted of 30 years ago. Yet getting things moving isn't easy, and homicide detective Deke Morgan, whose late father worked on that case, is reluctant to resurrect the whole thing, especially when he has another brutal murder on his plate. But someone else doesn't want the truth to come out and will stop at nothing to see that it stays buried. VERDICT With sharp detail, a nicely developed romance, and stellar plotting that distributes clues with chilling precision, Burton's latest "lock your door and keep the lights on" thriller beautifully kicks off her new series of four Nashville-set mysteries dealing with the Morgan family. Burton (You're Not Safe) lives in Virginia.
