When children leave home for college, parents can only hope that their teachings stick with the youngsters as they venture out into the broader world. Such is the case for Jim and Marilyn Anderson. Their youngest son, Doug, initially does well academically, keeps in touch, and comes home often. But he gradually falls off the path of family and faith and is tempted into trotting down a very different one, with serious consequences. As Doug is legally an adult, his parents can do nothing but pray for their son's safety. It is up to Doug to surrender himself to God. VERDICT This emotionally charged and sobering story of a spiritually lost young man trying to find his way through an unfamiliar world will resonate with parents of new adults who fear that their wayward progeny may never return to them or their faith. Marked by fully fleshed-out characters and an intensifying pace, this final volume of the authors' "The Restoration" series (after The Desire) won't let down followers of these inspirational books.

The fourth and final installment in Walsh and Smalley's Restoration series, following The Desire (2014), rings all too true as it follows Doug Anderson as he attempts independence for the first time. While delving deeper into a lifestyle far from his parents' Christian beliefs, Doug learns how much more difficult things are without the support of faith and family. Meanwhile, his parents, Jim and Marilyn, struggle with questions about where they went wrong raising their youngest son and how they should respond to his poor behavior, while at the same time celebrating the progress of the rest of their family. Doug's rebellion is complicated by his ties to Christina, the young lady who rents from his parents, and who is tugging his heartstrings back toward home. This close-to-home, prodigal-son story will speak to readers who pushed their parents' boundaries and offer comfort to parents who fear their child is the only one acting out. Walsh and Smalley have written a story of romance, faith, and grace that is both enjoyable and powerful in its message.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
