When Julian, a young German, comes to America during Prohibition, he immediately builds a life for himself as a bootlegger. This leads him from one thing to another, including a thriving real estate business and a 30-year on-again, off-again romance with Kendall, an African American woman raised by her college president mother. Their relationship is tested over the years by their respective, divergent dreams and the ever-changing world in which they live and love. Golden's second novel (after Comeback Love) has its moments of amusing good humor and realistic historical landscape. However, there is no subtlety or finesse in the delivery of information; things are just stated outright. Readers won't have to work for or wonder about anything, lessening their investment in the text. This work just fails to lock readers in. VERDICT Only for those historical novel fans who are tickled by decades-long romantic trials.--Kristen Droesch, Library Journal
