Verdict: These tool kits for creating events that foster creativity and community are a natural fit for all public libraries and useful for performers and event/community organizers. Background: These two books guide readers through the process of organizing and participating in poetry slams-poetry performance competitions. In Take the Mic, Smith, who is credited with starting slam poetry in Chicago in the mid-1980s, and freelance author Kraynak detail the fine points of performing poetry, including confronting stage fright, memorization, rehearsals, stance, and tips for getting and promoting gigs. Stage a Slam flows from the inkling of hosting a slam (considering motives, vision, resources, and support) to execution specifics (selecting and preparing venues, making guests comfortable, promotions, obstacles, and making money). [HBO just premiered Brave New Voices, which follows performers as they prepare to compete in the national poetry slam finals.]-Lani Smith, Ohlone Coll. Lib., Fremont, CA
