Kathryn Burgert is sure that her life is ruined when she is sent to live in Seattle. It is 1852, and the fledgling town is just a backwoods settlement. Coming from San Francisco, she is disdainful of the residents' excitement over the building of a new steam-powered sawmill. When the village is attacked by Indians shortly after Kathryn arrives, it is about as much as she can take of her new home. She is rescued from a dead faint by Jason, a lumberjack at the sawmill. In spite of herself, as she gets to know Jason she begins to warm to his visions for a better, brighter Seattle. But nature and jealousies ignite to form a powerful wall of adversity that they may not be able to overcome. VERDICT This second historical series entry (after "A Bride for Noah") by "RT Book Reviews" Reviewer's Choice Award winner Copeland and acclaimed author Smith is more than a romance--it is also a story of the rugged perseverance of people with a dream and the drive to make it happen.
