In the latest charming novel by globally acclaimed Thomas (Daughter of the House, 2015), Iris, 82, a retired doctor, has built a life for herself in Cairo away from her family in England. With her strength and senses fading, she drifts in and out of recollections of years spent in the city during WWII, vivid and comforting scenes of soldier-filled streets, lavish dances, and her lost love, Xan. When her granddaughter, Ruby, abruptly appears at her door, Iris is jolted out of her reveries. Edgy, feisty Ruby brings excitement and wonder back into Iris' life, and Iris reluctantly agrees to let the teen stay temporarily. In gratitude, Ruby offers to listen to Iris' tales and be her memory. In vivid flashbacks, Thomas tells the story of Iris and Xan's meeting, separations, love, and eventual loss. Meanwhile, the beauty and adventure of Egypt tugs at Ruby, and she is drawn into a relationship of her own. When Iris and Ruby set off on a dangerous desert road trip, Ruby discovers her inner resources, and the bond between them is cemented. The descriptions of Egypt past and present are lush, and Iris and Ruby's growing, cross-generational closeness is affirming. Filled with intriguing characters and evocative settings, Thomas' lovely tale will have wide appeal.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
