Testing one's sense of what is real and what is a dream, Boening's National Poetry Series-winning collection is filled with unusual juxtapositions and quick cuts that make the poems seem movielike, even trancelike. These Ashbery-esque pieces are strange on the surface yet satisfying in the questions they ask and the challenging answers, with "one unanswered question/ after another, inflating this world/ into the next." Often narrative in tone and structure, the poems are occupied by an array of odd characters: a dancing lioness, an unhelpful hero, gods both big and small, and a man in a diner "who's been waiting...for days." These stories operate in a controlled spin, often slowing to a human conundrum: "This is it, you know./ We won't be getting a second chance." While seemingly difficult on the surface, these poems leave you wondering how they are able to grab you, to insinuate themselves, how they pull you in: "Who/ can avoid falling in love/ with a good lie." VERDICT A challenging but ultimately satisfying collection recommended for ambitious poetry readers.--Karla Huston, Appleton, WI
