The author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2004) spins a tale of a widow, her son, and their lodgers in London at the height of the Great War. Not long after Eithne Clay learns her husband has been killed in battle, she attracts the attention of the lascivious butcher, Neville Turk, who begins to shower her with extra portions, even as meat is being rationed. Eithne finds herself passionately drawn to Neville, much to the dismay of her 16-year-old son, Ralph, who can't stand the butcher. Ralph is studying to be a typesetter like his father was, but his admiration of a blinded vet who lodges with them named Alwyne Flyte leads Ralph to consider enlisting. Alwyne, an avowed Communist who passionately espouses workers' rights, has his eye, so to speak, on the unattractive but goodhearted maid, Winnie. When Eithne decides to marry Neville, his plans for her boardinghouse threaten to upend the lives of the motley assembly of residents. A charming tale moved along by several late-in-the-game twists.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
