Felicia Lyons' biggest problem is dealing with the daily drudgery of being a stay-at-home mom in suburban New Jerseyuntil a voice from her past threatens to shatter her marriage and her life. She dearly loves her childrenRory, 6; Twyla, 4, and Liv, 10 monthsbut manages to leave them long enough to audition for TV commercials, try out for an opportunity to join a local women's cultural group, even occasionally escape to a movie. Then she gets a call from the older man who seduced her at 14, impregnated her at 15, and left her to cope with the situation, one she's never revealed to her Columbia-educated husband, who thought he married a virgin. These memories take Felicia back to her childhood and the African American experience in South Philly, where she was raised by her grandmother after seeing her father nearly kill her mother. Johnson (Love in a Carry-on Bag, 2012) is a skilled storyteller with a breezy style, and the journey of Felicia, a strong African American woman, will have particular appeal for Terry McMillan fans.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
