Narrator Kevin Kenerly's voice packs a lot of punch. His narration describing the way one of the author's clients, a man who has lost a son to gun violence, takes on a defensive physical posture is gentle and powerful at the same time. Foiles, a Chicago social worker, uses five of his clients' stories to illustrate the toxic effects of city living on Chicago's diverse poor residents. Kenerly's authoritative voice is easy to listen to as Foley shows how people get caught up in controlling systems. The author calls for a contemporary poor people's movement. He begins a discussion that could start listeners thinking about how to reform probation, parole, and family services systems. J.A.S. AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine
