Grades 3-5 In this fourth Lucy title, after fourth-graders Lucy and pal Phillip get to sing their rainy-day-inspired song on the school TV's weather segment, Lucy finds herself ostracized by her fellow songwriting club members, who felt excluded from the appearance. Though Lucy makes amends, she soon discovers snooty Scarlett's plan for some club members to play for a wider audience. Lucy's attempts to be included go awry, but, eventually, everyone unites for their exciting opportunity. But when the big day arrives, a scary storm puts things on hold--and Lucy's little brother Leo goes missing. Thankfully, Leo's found, and the weather clears, and Lucy gets some perspective on what matters--family and friendship--whatever the weather. Narrator Lucy's a spirited, relatable character whose experiences, by turns funny and reflective, also touch on themes of being responsible and considerate. Appealing, expressive black-and-white line drawings and the kids' weather-connected lyrics are peppered throughout. Though more likely to resonate with series followers, this offers an engaging, ultimately upbeat read. Includes links to access Lucy's songs, as well as songwriting tips.

Gr 2-5-Lucy McGee is back with more zany adventures featuring her Songwriting Club classmates. In this adorable return to the lovable character, readers find out that fifth-grader Lucy, along with her friend Phillip, gets to sing one of their songs on their school's morning show. But when their attention-loving classmate Scarlett finds out that she and the rest of the Songwriting Club were not invited, they get angry. Lucy goes out of her way to smooth things over with them. When she and Phillip are invited back to the show, they promise not to appear without the rest of the group-however, the duo soon find out that Scarlett is secretly singing a song on television too, where her mom works! Lucy decides to have a Songwriting Club party at her home without telling her parents, and guilts Scarlett into inviting her and the rest of the club on the television show. Readers also catch up with Lucy's parents and her siblings Leo, who is obsessed with worms, and Lily, who cries loudly when she does not get her way. VERDICT Children who love some nonsensical fun, pranks, a little mischief, and made-up comical ukulele songs will enjoy. Great for any children's collection, and where the series is popular. -Annmarie Braithwaite, NYPL
