HENRY HIKES TO FITCHBURG begs that age-old question--is it the destination, or the journey, that is most important? This book, based on an incident in Thoreau's WALDEN, examines that question. Henry and his friend decide to go to Fitchburg but use different modes of transportation. Henry chooses to walk, and his self-assured, light lilting voice conveys his joy at the sights and diversions along the way. His friend, who works at odd jobs for train fare for the journey, has a slow, tired voice. The background music adds to the mood--jaunty and easygoing for Henry, lower and more ponderous for his friend. James Naughton reads in a wonderful, slow, steady voice, giving the reader time to look at the pictures and hear the words, but there's so much to see, it will take several readings to totally enjoy the trip.
