One of the most difficult accomplishments in all of sports is winning a World Series. The Boston Red Sox not only won the 2018 World Series, but they assembled one of the best baseball teams of all time. A dominating force, the Red Sox plowed through their opponents winning 108 regular season games and went 11-3 in the postseason. Boston Globe journalist Speier presents the story of the team's path to victory, from noteworthy moves, such as the trade of Yoan Moncada and the acquirement of Chris Sale, to the emergence of Xander Bogaerts, the Red Sox farm system, superstar Mookie Betts, and more. VERDICT Speier's thorough account provides a fascinating look at the building of an elite baseball club. Fans of the Red Sox wishing to learn more about the work that went into assembling this team will not want to miss this.--Gus Palas, Ela Area P.L., Lake Zurich, IL

As exceptional as was the Boston Red Sox draft class of 2011?Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley, Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and, somewhat later, Andrew Benintendi?it took time to develop what became the 2018 team. Former General Managers Theo Epstein and Ben Cherington were known for exceptional scouting, a strong minor-league system, and a sophisticated regimen of player development, all of which contributed to the 2013 championship, but rebuilding began when Dave Dombrowski (known as a dealer ) was brought in to replace Cherington, David Ortiz left as team leader in 2016, and Dustin Pedroia was chronically hurt. Dombrowski acquired pitchers Craig Kimbrel, David Price, and Chris Sale, and Speier tracks the development of the new core from 2011 to their 2018 championship. The managerial chaos eventuating in Alex Cora's ascension is also detailed, and, though the chronology is at times confusing, the narrative of a team in the making delivers compelling reading. A must for Red Sox fans.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
