In her first book, well-practiced professional diversity consultant Adams, PsyD, shares refreshing advice for workplace diversity and inclusion. Perhaps the most important point she makes is the difference between diversity ( the mix ) and inclusion ( making the mix work ). Second most important? That following a path to truly inclusive practices results in faster innovation, higher financial returns, and increased performance. Keeping those points in mind is an underlying thread throughout as she addresses unconscious bias, the reluctance to hold conversations, and reframing, planning, and measuring. Her explanations are detailed but not too industrial-organizational psychology-focused as she points out success stories of organizations like Kaiser Permanente and Sodexo, shares statistics about the most diverse U.S. communities, and talks to the efficacies of ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) and metrics. Each chapter's end features a quick summary and action steps to take and an abbreviated conclusion. Appended with FAQs, critical skills to consider, references, and notes.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
